The MAX3669 is a +3.3-V, 622-Mbit/s SDH/SONET laser driver with current monitors and automatic power control. It is designed for applications in 622-Mbit/s SDH/SONET transmission systems such as add/drop multiplexers, digital cross-connects, section regenerators, and optical transmitters. Some of its features include +3.3 or +5.0-V single operation, a 40-mA supply current at +3.3 V, programmable bias current from 1 to 80 mA, programmable modulation current from 5 to 75 mA, and a 200-ps rise/fall time.

Also, it uses only 132 mW of power while exceeding the ITU/Bellcore jitter-generation specification by 160 ps p-p by 60 ps p-p. It accepts differential PCL data and clock inputs and provides bias and modulation currents for driving a laser. When combined with the MAX3693 4:1 serializer, the MAX3669 forms a complete, low-power 622-Mbit/s transmitter. An APC feedback loop maintains a constant average optical power temperature and lifetime.

Available factory-direct in a 5- by 5-mm, 32-pin TQFP package and as dice, it is specified for −40°C to +85°C. Evaluation kits are available. Prices start at $9.75 each for 1000-piece quantities.
