The AK4534 single-chip codec combines low power consumption, a 16-bit monaural analog-to-digital converter (ADC), a stereo digital-to-analog converter (DAC), a phase-locked loop (PLL), and headphone and speaker amplifiers. Designed for portable applications, the ADC and DAC support 16-bit sampling rates from 8 to 48 kHz. The built-in mono ADC, automatic level control (ALC), and microphone amplifiers ensure trouble-free recording for voice recognition and audio memo applications. The headphone delivers up to 15 mW into 8- to 32-Ω loads, while the mono speaker delivers up to 150 mW.

Dual mono and stereo analog inputs can be used to mix a variety of external analog signals from cell-phone controllers, MP3 decoders, and external sources. With this mixing, designers can create a unified audio system for combination cell-phone/PDA devices. The built-in PLL provides internal audio clock generation, simplifying synchronization of system microprocessor and audio clocks. Also, the AK4534 requires a single 2.4- to 3.6-V power supply. The codec's programmable registers manage its power. All of the chip's functional blocks can be powered down individually, letting circuit and system designers take an active role in power management.

Available in a 48-pin LQFP package or a small leadless 52-pin QFN package, the AK4534 costs $8.21 in 1000-unit quantities.
