Power Amplifiers Extend Battery Life In Handhelds

July 5, 2006
Avago’s CoolPAM modules are employed in a W-CDMA reference design.

The ACPM-73xx CoolPAM power amplifier modules allow manufacturers of handheld and portable devices to offer 3G features while significantly extending battery life, according to Avago Technologies. The company announced that the modules had been incorporated in a reference design from a leading W-CDMA chipset manufacturer. The reference design employs the ACPM-7311 for UMTS800 (Band 5, 824 to 849 MHz), the ACPM-7331 for UMTS1900 (Band 2, 1850 to 1910 MHz), and the ACPM-7381 for UMTS2100 (Band 1, 1920 to 1980 MHz) operation. The design supports High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) and W-CDMA UMTS/GSM/GPRS/EDGE networks.

The CoolPAM W-CDMA modules operate at 3.2 to 4.2 V for compatibility with low-current devices. They have 50-ohm input and output matching networks and include a control pin that sets operating parameters for the highest efficiency when running at low output power. All versions are HSDPA compatible. The devices come in a 4-mm by 4-mm by 1.1-mm, 10-pin surface-mount module. They are fabricated with an advanced InGaP heterojunction bipolar transistor technology.

AVAILABILITY
The modules are sampling now. Volume production is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2006. PRICING
The ACPM-7381, ACPM-7331, and ACPM-7311 CoolPAM modules cost $1.85 in 10,000-unit quantities. FOR MORE INFORMATION
