By virtue of its ability to operate from a single positive supply voltage of 5.5V to 15.8V, the STLC3055 subscriber line interface IC (SLIC) is well-suited for applications in short-loop telephone systems. All voltages required for SLIC operation are generated internally by the chip using an integrated dc-to-dc converter block. Moreover, power dissipation is minimized by the converter’s high efficiency and by adjusting the line voltage in the off-hook state according to the load on tip and ring wires. The IC is fully functional at 5.5V, which extends the effective life of emergency backup batteries because it continues to operate even when battery voltage is very low. This feature makes the device useful for wireless local-loop equipment.
