Representing the first member of a new line of multi-rate, multi-channel framer ICs for use in high-speed, SONET/SDH access and metro area optical networks, the TSOT1610G is designed to fully support 16 channels of OC-3/STM-1, 16 channels of OC-12/STM-4, four channels of OC-48/STM-16, or a single OC-192/STM-64. In addition, the framer is said to support a rich set of new features that help service providers offer additional services, such a transparent multiplexing. Addressing multi-service switching platforms, add-drop multiplexers, and digital cross-connects in a single device, the TSOT1610G is intended to simplify hardware and software development efforts, upgrade existing systems to increase port density, and lower overall system costs. The new CMOS framer/pointer processor system-on-a-chip can, among other things, aggregate multiple data rate signals and perform several essential optical link traffic management functions simultaneously. It can be used to multiplex 16 channels of OC-12, 16 channels of OC-3, or four channels of OC-48 into a single, 10-Gb/s stream and then make the reverse conversion as well. The device also features two built-in hitless time-slot interchange switches equipped with two sets of work and protect connection memory maps. A suite of tools for specific applications, including drivers, an application program interface, and app notes for various operating modes is also available. AGERE SYSTEMS, Dept. A52, Allentown, PA.
