Capable of working with frequencies ranging from 950 to 2,150 MHz, the 5504 direct conversion receiver (DCR) IC is earmarked for use in digital wireless applications, including digital satellite and VSAT receivers. The device accepts the 950-to-2,150 MHz signal and down-converts it directly to baseband. The local oscillator signal is generated by a completely integrated PLL that is programmable through a standard serial port interface. The 5504 is said to yield DCRs with fewer components than conventional, dual-conversion approaches. The IC comes in 48-pin QFPs costing $3.25 each/10,000. The 5504 DCR chip is the second product to issue from the company's R&D effort focused on developing low-cost receivers for the wireless communications markets. The first IC, the 5503 DCR, is aimed at the direct broadcast satellite (DBS) market.
