The first stackable small-form-factor (SFF) components available for Gigabit Ethernet and Fibre Channel applications have arrived. Designed for next-generation metropolitan-area networks (MANs), storage-area networks (SANs), and local-area networks (LANs), the D21 optical transceiver fully complies with IEEE 802.3z and ANSI X3.297 standards. It exhibits low levels of jitter over the Telecordia temperature range of −40°C to 85°C. The D21 uses vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers operating at 850 nm and can achieve a range of up to 550 meters on multimode fiber. Available now, the transceiver has an eight- to 10-week delivery time. Price is typically $60 to $85 per port in large production quantities.
