Sonet/SDH, which dominates metro and long-haul networks, has always been complex and expensive. But it works so well! Parama Networks now makes it easier and less expensive to build next-generation Sonet/SDH metro edge and core products that incorporate packet over Sonet, the multiservice provisioning platform (MSPP), and the multiservice transport (MSTP) platform.
Key to all Sonet/SDH systems is the add/drop multiplexer (ADM). Parama's most recent ADM-on-a-chip (AoC) is the full-featured PN18010. This 0.13-µm CMOS device is housed in an 831-pin flip-chip BGA package. With a 1.2-V core and 2.5- and 3.3-V I/O, it consumes a maximum of 4 W.
Eight low-speed, independently programmable ports incorporated in the PN18010 run at OC-3/12 or STM 1/4 speeds. Also included are two 2.4-Gbit/s OC-48/STM-16 ports. The device handles all concatenation levels of the synchronous transport signal. It supplies all section and line termination and generation of traffic on the 10 ports, with pointer processing and frame alignment. A full 10-Gbit/s STS-1/STM-0 cross-connect is provided across all interfaces. Physical interfaces, based on low-voltage differential-signaling technology, feature a variety of programmable bus width and speed combinations. The PN18010 also offers full Sonet functionality plus extra built-in features, such as virtual rings, multiring termination, and Sonet mesh.
Samples are available now, with full production in early 2005. Prices start at $350.
