Volvo selected SMSC's Media Oriented Systems Transport (MOST) oPHY networking technology as part of the infotainment system for the V70 and C70 platforms. MOST, which enables the networking of in-vehicle infotainment systems, is used today in over 50 car models. "The Volvo wins represent a key development for our business as this early adopter of the MOST technology has now broadly rolled it out across its volume models," Christian Thiel, Vice President and Managing Director of SMSC’s automotive group, said in a statement. MOST technology provides the means to distribute multimedia entertainment functions among various control devices in a car. For example, a CD changer, radio, global positioning system, mobile telephone and DVD player can be established in an efficient ring network and can send audio signals digitally to the amplifier over the MOST network. MOST provides up to 150 Mbps of speed for applications like high-definition video and multi-channel surround sound.
