A new network processing platform is said to be the industry's most complete one for building Internet infrastructure equipment at the intelligent optical edge. It consists of the nP7250 network processor (NPU), nPX5700 traffic management chipset, and nPX5800 switch fabric IC, combined with the nPsoft development environment. These elements provide a fully integrated, highly programmable, feature-rich platform for OC-48c and OC-192c connections, the company says. All parts of the platform are designed to mesh seamlessly, allowing networking and communications vendors to minimize time-to-market, while delivering system QoS and other features. The nP7250, packaged in a 673-pin PBGA, is claimed as the first single-chip, fully programmable NPU capable of full wire-speed processing of both packets and cells in a single-stream at full-duplex OC-48c-unlike other solutions that support multiple channelized OC-12 streams. The nPX5700 traffic management chipset consists of the nPX5710 control logic chip, packaged in a 601-pin PBGA, and the nPX5720 buffering chip, packaged in a 1,125-pin PBGA. In volume, pricing for the nP7250 begins at $300 each, the nPX5710 and nPX5720 at $400 each, and the nPX5800 at $600 each.
