Reduced complexity, design time and power dissipation are all on the list of advantages accompanying the arrival of two new sophisticated ICs for metropolitan area networks (MANs). They include the Roshni low-power, dual OC-48 SONET/SDH framer and pointer processor with Packet-over-SONET (POS) and ATM mapping capabilities and the Decathlon 10-Gigabit Ethernet and OC-192c SONET/SDH transport device targeted for use in laser modules. Both ICs are members of the Metro Connect Architecture (MCA) family of products for 10-Gb Ethernet, OC-192c SONET, OC-48 SONET data transport and Internet Protocol (IP) applications.Designed for next generation metro IP/Ethernet ring-based platforms, the Roshni dual-channel chip dissipates only 1.25W per OC-48 path and offers transmission convergence capabilities for POS and ATM at STS-48c, -48 and -12 data streams. And each channel can connect to external serializer/deserializer devices via LVPECL or LVDS line-side interfaces and to system-side devices through POS-PHY Level 3 or Utopia Level 2/3 interfaces. Designed to help integrate 10-Gb Ethernet and OC-192c SONET features into WAN switches and routers, the Decathlon chip includes the Physical Coding Sub-Layer (PCS), WAN Interface Sub-Layer (WIS), and a rate matching 10-Gb Media Independent Interface (XGMII) for direct connections to 10-Gb Ethernet MACs. It can operate in three modes: 10-Gigabit Ethernet LAN-PHY, OC-192c WAN-PHY and SONET/ SDH OC-192c path terminator with an external engine.
