Measuring a mere 0.955" x 0.955" x 0.29" high, the XE2420 surface-mount modem IC is reported to be the smallest in the industry. The device contains a modem controller, ROM, analog front-end, and telephone line interface in a 24-pin, hybrid PLCC (HyPLCC) package. Other features include a power consumption of 330 mW in operation and less than 1 µW in power-down mode, configuration via standard AT commands, and data transfer rates at 2,400, 1,200 and 300 b/s using V.22bis, V.22, V.23, V.21, and Bell 202/212 A/103 protocols. The modem IC also integrates, via data access arrangement (DAA) circuitry, ring detection, loop-current holding circuitry, and hook switch. Price: $20 each/10,000. XECOM INC., Milpitas, CA.
