Touted as the industry’s most integrated 2.5G VT/TU pointer processor and cross connect device, the PM5364 and TUPP 2488 for OC-48 SONET and STM-16 SDH, respectively, perform grooming and cross-connecting for private lines carrying Ethernet, frame relay, and voice services in metropolitan access networks. These capabilities are said to substantially reduce carrier costs by replacing high-power, multi-chassis, digital cross-connects in the network core with low-cost service cards in access networks. The service cards can be deployed into existing add/drop multiplexers (ADMs), multi-service provisioning platforms (MSPPs), and STS-1/AU-4 optical cross connects. The OC-48/STM-16 device integrates pointer processing, payload alignment, a 2.5 Gbit/s VT/TU cross-connect, performance monitoring, and 622 Mb/s and 2.5 Gb/s serial I/O technology. For networks requiring scalability beyond 2.5 Gb/s, the TUPP 2488 connects to the company’s NSE-20G or NSE-8G cross-connects for 20 Gb/s and 7.5 Gb/s operation, respectively. The PM5364 and TUPP 2488 come in a 35 mm x 35 mm, 580-pin UBGA package priced at $750 each/1,000. PMC SIERRA, Santa Clara, CA. (604) 415-6065.
