Said to be the industry’s first 10-Gb/s Ethernet switch on a single chip, the MB87Q3050BYL combines 12 Ethernet ports with buffer memories and I/O macros on a total area of 256-mm square. The device makes use of multi-ported memory that allows simultaneous read and write operation to and from all 12 ports, providing a total bandwidth of 240 Gb/s. Pin-to-pin switching latencies are down from several microseconds to 450 ns, the result of a shared memory control program and cut-through delivery mechanism that forwards packets quickly to the appropriate output ports. Core clock speed is 312.5 MHz and typical power consumption is approximately 15W. The chip also includes a XAUI SERDES interface and 10-Gb/s Ethernet MAC that complies with IEEE 802.3ae. Available in a 728-pin flip-chip BGA package, prices start at $750 each/10,000. For further information, contact Emi Igarashi at FUJITSU MICROELECTRONICS AMERICA INC., Sunnyvale, CA. (408) 737-5647.
