Focussing in on a range of applications from factory automation to remote sensing and metering, the ISL8487, ISL81483, and ISL81487 half-duplex, fractional-load RS-485/422 transceivers operate from a 5V supply over a ±10% tolerance voltage range of 4.5V to 5.5V. The half-duplex devices reduce power supply requirements with low quiescent currents of 120 µA (ISL8487 and ISL81483) and 300 µA (ISL81487) and miniscule shutdown-mode currents as low as 1 nA. The ISL8487 is a quarter-unit load device that enables up to 128 nodes. Reportedly, four of these transceivers have the bus loading effect of one single-unit-load transceiver. The ISL81483 and ISL81487 are slew-rate limited, eighth-unit load devices that enable up to 256 nodes. Each transceiver provides a −7V to +12V common-mode input voltage, thermal shutdown, short-circuit protection, and Class 3 ESD protection to 7 kV human-body model on all pins. The devices are available in 8-lead PDIP and SOIC packages with an operating temperature range from −40°C to +85°C. Price is $1.20 each/100. For more details, call Mark E.
