All transmit functions from the power amplifier (PA) to the antenna to the handset in quad-band GSM/GPRS cellular handsets are integrated into the RF3177 transmit module. The device contains a quad band PA, power control, pHEMT antenna switch with four independent receive ports and all associated filtering, duplexing and control functions. The unit is packaged in a laminate-based module that measures 9 mm x 10 mm x 1.5 mm. It is the final component of the transmit chain in a handset and is intended to eliminate the PA-to-switch-matching design effort since no external matching components are required. Silicon CMOS technology is used for the power control and GaAs HBT for the power amplifier. The antenna switch function is based on the pHEMT process. Software tools are provided to allow for the calculation of ramp profiles. Price is $2.99 each/10,000. RF MICRO DEVICES, Greensboro, NC. (336) 664-1233.
