In a 48-lead LFCSP measuring 7 mm x 7 mm, the AD6546 Othello-E emerges as the smallest quad-band EDGE/GSM/GPRS transceiver available. Based on the company's direct conversion Othello radio architecture, the transceiver integrates all critical components, including voltage-controlled oscillators, PLL filters, and power management, yielding a complete quad-band EDGE radio design. The device can operate in the 850-, 900-, 1,800-, and 1,900-MHz frequency bands, enabling worldwide coverage. The device achieves the high linearity necessary to support EDGE data rates via a logarithmic RF-power detector that configures a closed-loop polar modulation transmitter design. This closed-loop architecture maintains stable, reliable, spec-compliant performance regardless of variations in power-amp characteristics due to manufacturing process variations, component aging, temperature, or frequency.
