Supporting 1-Mb/s data rates, the XR19L2x2 series dual-channel, 8-bit UARTs also integrate an RS-232 transceiver, making them viable for use in a wide range of consumer and battery powered applications. The series includes the XR19L202, XR19L212, and XR19L222 devices, which offer different packaging and modem interface options. The XR19L222 supports full modem interfaces, while the XR19L212 supports a half modem interface and can be used in any application where the legacy modem I/Os are not needed or used. In addition to the TX and RX signals, the RTS and CTS signals are provided to support automatic hardware or software flow control to prevent RX FIFO overrun errors. The XR19L202 handles quarter modem requirements and is deployable in any application needing just TX and RX signals. All three operate from a 3V to 5.5V power supply and can survive ±15 kV of ESD on the RS-232 lines while maintaining output levels. Prices range around $5 each/1,000. EXAR CORP., Fremont, CA.
