The intent behind the Qualcomm Internet Processor (IPQ) family, says Qualcomm Atheros, is to transform networking devices, such as home gateways, routers, and media servers, into “Smarthome” platforms. The Smarthome platform combines Qualcomm’s dual-core, 1.4-GHz Krait CPU with Qualcomm Atheros’ dual-core 730-MHz packet processor engine. The Krait CPU manages advanced functions (e.g., complex Internet-based applications and services), while the engine offloads network traffic, supporting up to 5 Gbits/s of aggregate capacity across LTE, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, HomePlug powerline, hybrid wired/wireless, and Ethernet. The company’s security, in addition to encryption, TrustZone, and secure boot, all support advanced services like home and health monitoring. The 28-nm IPQ optimizes energy consumption by scaling system operation to adjust to network demands. Thanks to its flexible, modular architecture that features a PHY-agnostic processor, customers can reuse hardware designs and software investments across DSL, cable, and fiber access products. The platform supports PCIe, USB 3.0, SATA3, SDIO, and Gigabit Ethernet.
