Wide-Dynamic-Range RF Power Detectors Increase Accuracy

Dec. 17, 2013
RF power detectors provide wide dynamic range, temperature stability and accurate measurement of signal power.

Two new RF power detectors from ADI, the ADL5903 and ADL5506, provide wide dynamic range, temperature stability and accurate measurement of signal power from small packages with low-power operation. The ADL5903, a true rms responding power detector with 35 dB measurement range and intrinsically ripple-free error transfer function, is optimal for high frequency systems requiring accurate RMS-to-dc conversion from 200 MHz to 6 GHz, independent of waveform characteristics. It operates from −55°C to +125°C and requires just a single 3 V to 5 V power supply and a few capacitors. The ADL5506, a complete subsystem for the measurement of RF signals in the 30 MHz to 4.5 GHz frequency range (45 dB typical dynamic range) is intended for use in wireless terminal devices. It consumes 3.8 mA from a 3 V supply and provides temperature stability over −40°C to +85°C. Both devices are available now as samples and in production quantities. The ADL5903, supplied in a 2 × 2 mm, 8-lead LFCSP, is priced at $2.35 each/1,000. The ADL5506, available in a 6-ball WLCSP, is priced at $1.27 each/1,000.
