Bluetooth Gets Ultra-Low Latency and Higher Throughput

New Bluetooth human interface device standards add new features.

What you’ll learn:

  • Why the ultra-low-latency (ULL) human interface device (HID) is great for gaming.
  • How to double Bluetooth throughput.

Alfredo Perez, Senior Technical Marketing Manager at the Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG), talks about two of the latest Bluetooth features (watch the video above). These include ultra-low-latency (ULL) human interface device (HID) support and the LE 2M PHY double-data-rate option.

The ultra-low-latency HID targets gaming controllers and applications where very low latency is critical. The initial lack of this feature is why many high-performance gaming controllers are set up to use proprietary wireless solutions. It will also be very useful for augmented, virtual, or mixed-reality (AR/VR/MR) glasses that are designed to work with wireless controllers like smart rings. The system is designed to support polling rates up to 1 kHz.

The faster data transmission is accomplished with the LE 2M PHY with double-data-rate support, delivering 2 Mb/s. The enhancement comes from the Bluetooth high-data-throughput project. The throughput may eventually rise to 8 Mb/s.

These features join other new Bluetooth solutions like channel sounding and broadcasting. Channel sounding provides secure and accurate positioning information for Bluetooth devices. The broadcast support is part of the Auracast feature.
