A new phase-locked loop (PLL) synthesizer module has been designed for CATV headend equipment. The PBA1560A uses chip-scale packaging technology to achieve a frequency range of from 1,173 to 1,943 MHz with a step size of 1,000 kHz. It has a phase noise spec of –96 dBc at 10 kHz offset and –120 dBc at 100 kHz offset or, equivalently, a rms phase error of 2.1° integrated over 100 Hz to 100 kHz. With a maximum start-up lock time of 10 ms and a channel-to-channel switching speed of 2.5 ms, the device delivers 4±3 dBm into a 50_ load. Harmonic suppression is –10 dBc. Price is $49 each in prototype quantities. Z-COMMUNICATIONS INC., San Diego, CA. (858) 621-2700.
