Embarking as the market’s smallest, the MAX4970, MAX4971, and MAX4972 over-voltage protectors measure 2 mm x 1.5 mm and protect against faults up to 28V. To minimize voltage dropout, the devices integrate a FET with a typical on resistance of 40 milliOhms. Target applications include media players, cell phones, PDAs, and digital cameras. The devices can drive an optional external pFET to protect against reverse-polarity voltages. Additionally, bypassing IN with a 1-?F capacitor to ground provides input protection up to ±15kV ESD as per the human body model. Over-voltage thresholds are preset to 4.65V (MAX4972), 5.8V (MAX4970), or 6.35V (MAX4971) and each device is available in a 12-ball WLP.
