Combining 3D orientation with mouse-click detection, the FC30 debuts as the first member of a family of MEMS functional sensors that consolidates multiple conventional sensor functions into a surface-mount package. The device, in a 14-pin LGA package measuring 3 mm x 5 mm x 0.9 mm, requires no extra programming and its three external interrupt lines allow users to build applications quickly, i.e., automatic portrait/landscape recognition for portable products. According to the company, the sensor's very low current draw in normal operation as well as an external power-down control makes it highly suitable for a wide range of portable products. Samples are available now with volume production set for the third quarter with prices in the $1 range. For more details, call STMICROELECTRONICS, Lexington, MA. (888) 787-3550.
