For a closer look at cutting-edge technology, just head to Cambridge, Massachusetts. The Emerging Technologies Conference, cosponsored by Penton Media (www.penton.com) and Technology Review (www.technologyreview.com), will encompass a series of keynote speeches and panel discussions focused on the latest and greatest throughout the industry.

The event will be held at the Kresge Auditorium on the campus of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Sept. 24 and 25. Keynote speakers will include Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Computer Corp., Jeffrey R. Immelt, CEO and chairman of General Electric, and Nathan Myhrvold, cofounder and managing director of Intellectual Ventures.

The conference will also honor the third class of the TR100, the world's top 100 young (under 35) innovators who are transforming fields like biotechnology, computing, telecommunications, and nanotechnology. Bob Metcalfe, inventor of the Ethernet and cofounder of 3Comm, will be host.

Topics explored on the first day will include several near-term technology trends and the opportunities they present. Also discussed will be self-configuring sensor networks for monitoring and networks that link people to information and services; approaches to safer and more effective pharmaceuticals; and the implications of hydrogen fuel for cars.

On the second day, the group will center on emerging technologies that will most likely change the world—from the innovator's perspective. Top innovators will offer insights on infotechnology, biotechnology, and nanotechnology. In the afternoon, panelists will discuss the controversial issue of stem cells, which offer new hopes for people with diseased organs and limbs. The conference will close with a look at the future of e-commerce and a review of some recent success stories.
