Conformally Coated Ceramic Capacitors Move Up To Automotive Grade

April 3, 2007
AVX has introduced the AR Series of capacitors, which carry temperature ratings up to 150°C.

The AR Series represents the first automotive-grade conformally coated, ceramic, radial-leaded capacitors, according to AVX Corp. The series uses NPO, X7R, and the recently added X8R dielectrics. Standard maximum operating temperature is 125°C, but the addition of the X8R dielectric boosts the temperature limit to 150°C. The capacitors are available in values of 1 pF to 1 µF and with voltage ratings up to 200 V dc. They come in 16 case sizes and with either straight or formed lead configurations, with lead spacing from 0.100 to 0.375 in. Packaging options include bulk, tape and reel, and ammo packaging.

Their high operating temperature limits make the AR Series capacitors well-suited for a variety of automotive and industrial applications including under-hood, in-cabin, and down-hole environments. The capacitors are AEC-Q200 qualified, which will be important to designers requiring a production part approval process (PPAP). All the necessary PPAP data is complete and is available on request.
