SAW Filter Eyes Next-Generation Cell Phones Using 5-GHz Band

Claimed to be the first compact surface acoustic wave (SAW) filter in the industry to use the 5 GHz band, this new device is targeted for use in next-generation, high-speed cellular communications products. Developed jointly by Fujitsu Laboratories Ltd., Fujitsu Media Devices and Fujitsu Microelectronics Inc., the tiny 5-GHz SAW filter is made using a process that combines electron beam lithography and reactive ion etching techniques.
The combination of this 0.2-micron, fine-pattern manufacturing process and the company's proprietary ladder-type SAW filter design is used to create a low-loss, wideband 5-GHz device that fits in a surface-mount package measuring less than 2.5 mm x 2 mm x 1 mm. Minimum insertion loss of the new SAW filter is less than 3 dB and stop-band attenuation is more than 25 dB. Samples are scheduled to ship by the end of 2001.
