ATCA Backplane Boosts Performance, Reduces Cost

The company’s latest high-speed ATCA backplane with Z-plane Links promises to significantly boost system performance while lowering costs. Allegedly, it delivers as much as triple the performance of traditional versions of the architecture. The Z-plane Links carry the high-speed signals with long traces via a small PCB board that plugs directly into the rear of the backplane while basic clock signals and shorter trace lines are left on the backplane. This orthogonal link approach allows the backplane to have only six to eight layers, in comparison to a traditional ATCA backplane that may have 18 to 24 layers or higher.
