Precision Orientation Sensor Combo Enhances Freedom

Aug. 3, 2013
eCompass combines 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis magnetometer in single LGA package measuring 2 x 2 mm.

ST is touting their new LSM303C as the world’s smallest eCompass, combining a 3-axis accelerometer and 3-axis magnetometer in a single package. Measuring 2 x 2 mm, the chip is used for advanced navigation and motion-sensitive features in products such as smartphones. Inside a smartphone or activity-monitoring bracelet, the eCompass helps designers optimize their component layout and minimize Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular radio interference thereby improving the performance of applications like indoor navigation or advanced motion tracking. Integrating a high-performance three-axis magnetic field sensor with a state-of-the-art three-axis accelerometer, the device provides an accurate orientation signal at its 16-bit digital output. The magnetic-field sensor has a full-scale magnetic-field strength range of ±16 Gauss or ±1600 µT, and the accelerometer has a selectable full-scale range of ±2 g, ±4 g or ±8 g. When combined with a discrete miniature gyroscope, 9-axis sensing is achieved in smartphones, gaming controllers or sports monitors. The LSM303C eCompass is sampling now, with mass production LGA packages expected in December 2013. Pricing begins at $1.10 each/1,000.
