Single-Axis Motion Controller Resides In Single Chip

Feb. 1, 2001

Retaining many of the features of the Navigator line, the Pilot series's MC3110 is a low-cost motion processor that offers single-axis control in a single chip. The device is designed to control brushed servomotors, with the Pilot family of products soon to also include a single-chip motion processor for brushless servo motors.
The 132-pin, surface-mount CMOS technology device operates on 5V and is driven by a host microprocessor through an asynchronous bi-directional serial port, giving users the ability to offload resource intensive motion control functions from the application's host. Other features include over 130 commands, a bias offset, user-selectable profiling modes including S-curve, trapezoidal and velocity contouring, and a pre-programmed PID filter with feedforward velocity and acceleration that can be scaled.
The MC3110 supports a 32-bit position error, trace capabilities, and accepts feedback from an incremental encoder, or absolute encoder or resolver. In addition, the chip supports 16-bit D/A conversion or 10-bit, 20 kHz PWM compatible output signals. Price is $28 in OEM quantities.
