Flared Pin-Fin Heatsinks Keep Green Applications Cool
Cool Innovations has introduced a line of flared pin-fin heatsinks that provide unparalleled cooling power due to their unique structure, which was specifically optimized for natural convection environments, according to the company (see the figure). With their rugged array of round pins, they suit harsh industrial environments and outdoor applications.
These heatsinks use an array of round pins that are slanted outward. The sparsely configured staggered pin array and flared structure combine for outstanding cooling power in natural convection, Cool Innovations says. Also, the omnidirectional pin configuration ensures the heatsinks operate efficiently in any orientation. The flared pin fins provide up to a 30% performance premium over traditional pin-fin heatsinks and a substantially larger cooling premium over most other designs, the company claims.
Forged from highly thermally conductive aluminum alloys, they’re available in a wide variety of square, rectangular, and round configurations with footprints ranging from 1.0 by 1.0 in. to 5.0 by 5.0 in. with heights from 0.7 to 2.0 in. They can be used in solar cells, advanced LED lighting, and other emerging green technologies as well as in other applications designed for natural convection environments.
