Tantalum Polymer Capacitors Have Frameless Design

Sept. 9, 2013
AVX Corporation introduced a new series of miniature, Frameless, tantalum polymer SMD capacitors.

A new series of miniature, frameless, tantalum polymer SMD capacitors from AVX Corp., the F38 series, utilizes proprietary FRAMELESST technology, which is characterized by a unique lead-frame-less and facedown structure, precise dimensions, and low-stress packaging. The surface-mount capacitors provide high capacitance in miniature M and S cases for high volumetric efficiency.  Featuring conductive polymer cathodes, which can handle high ripple currents, F38 Series capacitors also exhibit low ESR, low ESL, and low, flat impedance over a wide frequency range, and are ideal for use in a broad range of consumer applications, including: smartphones, tablet PCs, portable gaming devices, and wireless modules.

Impervious to capacitance variations resulting from fluctuations in temperature or voltage, the new F38 Series tantalum polymer capacitors provide design engineers with a high-reliability alternative to the noise-emitting MLCCs in mobile phone and other handheld consumer device applications.

Rated for use in temperatures ranging from -55 C to +105 C, AVX's new F38 Series tantalum polymer capacitors are RoHS-compliant, halogen free, and available in two case sizes: M (1.6 mm x 0.85 mm x 0.8 mm) and S (2.0 mm x 1.25 mm x 0.8 mm).  Currently, M-case F38 Series capacitors are available rated for 10 V and 2.2 F or 10 V and 4.7 F; however, the following ratings are in development and slated for introduction later this year: 6.3 V and 22 F, 6.3 V and 47 F, and 10 V and 10 F.  S-case F38 Series capacitors are currently available rated for 6.3 V and 47 F.  Two additional S-case ratings, 4 V and 100 F and 10 V and 22 F, are also in development and slated for introduction later this year.
