There have been a lot of changes to the way we do business in this “year without a year” in the era of COVID-19. One of the biggest things we’ve had to do without is personal contact, a major aspect of trade shows and conferences. However, the industry has adapted and created online interactive venues which can accomplish the goal of highlighting the participant’s latest achievements.

One of the major events of the year, embedded world, has also had to transition online, and did a pretty good job of it. In this year’s virtual event, 301 exhibitors, about the same number of congress presentations, and a further 250 or so informative contributions will enliven the exhibition. From 1 to 5 March, embedded world DIGITAL will give experts and decision-makers in the field of embedded system development an online platform to interact with one another and share knowledge.

Ubuntu Linux migration

ADLINK Technology announced that it has an agreement with Canonical to pre-certify ADLINK devices with the Ubuntu Linux operating system (OS). This will create a complete hardware and software device offering with fully supported security and operational updates for the device lifecycle. The agreement eliminates the need for customers to install the device OS themselves and to work with the OS provider for licensing and support, enabling ADLINK to support ODM projects by enabling certification and licensing for ODM customers.

ADLINK devices will be pre-installed with Ubuntu Linux, with Canonical offering ADLINK customers full, ongoing technical support and automatic updates until the OS release reaches its designated end-of-life date.Developed by Canonical, Ubuntu Linux provides security updates and support for each Ubuntu release. ADLINK and Canonical technologies have been involved in a range of robotic and autonomous vehicle initiatives, including the Indy Autonomous Challenge, the first head-to-head high-speed autonomous vehicle race to be held in October 2021 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Advanced sensing solutions

Swindon Silicon Systems is a provider of custom integrated circuits (ICs), including Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) ICs, for the industrial, industrial IoT, and automotive sectors. Its custom IC sensor solutions measure pressure, temperature, position, acceleration and proximity, among others. Swindon’s focus at this year’s Embedded World is the industrial sector with an emphasis on smart sensors and the IIoT.

Swindon’s sensor interface ASICs for the connected world help engineers to design intelligent and efficient factory automation and control systems that increase productivity, extend system life and save energy. Swindon incorporates these functions into a mixed-signal ASIC or a SiP solution which provides many advantages and performance enhancements for the smart sensor over traditional discrete component-level solutions. Enhancing a product with a customer-specific IC brings many advantages, including greater functionality, smaller size and lower overall cost.

Remarking on the value of the event, Richard Mount, Swindon’s Sales and Marketing Director, said, “We are excited to be taking part in the digital event this year. Standout features of Embedded World have always been the quality of the visitors and the wide range of projects that they wish to discuss with exhibitors. We look forward to engaging with visitors to learn about their needs and to demonstrate how, as an end-to-end custom IC solutions company, our close partnership and collaboration with customers throughout the entire design and production process sets us apart from other suppliers.”

Automated Test

Parasoft, a developer of automated software testing for over 30 years, announced the 2021.1 release of Parasoft C/C++test, the unified C and C++ development testing solution for embedded applications. This release gives embedded development teams the speed and efficiency of a modern, highly automated CI/CD pipeline with fully integrated static and unit testing for delivery of continuous compliance and quality.

The new release of Parasoft C/C++test continues its comprehensive support for the latest compliance standards, including the most recent release of MISRA C 2012. To efficiently achieve compliance with DISA ASD STIG security guidelines, the C/C++test 2021.1 release introduces a new configuration and support. New integrations with GitHub, Bitbucket, Gitlab, and MS Azure DevOps streamline CI/CD workflows.

“Embedded dev teams can deliver safe, secure, and reliable software faster by integrating automated static analysis, unit testing, and structural code coverage into their continuous delivery workflow supporting the increasing trend to migrate to Git-based CI/CD platforms. And our new integration with Jama Connect builds bidirectional traceability between requirements and tests, further automating the verification and validation of requirements,” said Richard Sherrard, VP of Products at Parasoft.

Embedded vision

Basler is demonstrating that its cooperation with strong partners such as NXP, NVIDIA, and Amazon Web Services at embedded world 2021 DIGITAL simplifies the path to the final embedded vision solution for customers. The highlight at the trade show, is a processing kit that rethinks embedded vision: the board, developed in-house by Basler, is optimized for a wide range of vision applications in terms of both hardware and software.

Due to its design developed for industrial use, the kit can be used not only for prototyping, but also in series production. With the Embedded Vision Processing Kit, developers can thus obtain ready-to-use vision solutions very quickly. For the i.MX 8M Plus SoC from NXP, which will be available in mid-March, Basler has developed a high-performance vision system for machine learning applications that features a particularly lean architecture: Basler's specially designed dart communicates seamlessly with the ISP while providing real-time image processing.

Basler has created additional software interfaces for NVIDIA's Jetson edge computing platform: Now, as a standard, the two 5 and 13 MP Add-on Camera Kits are not only compatible with the Jetson Nano, but also with the more powerful Jetson Xavier NX. Add-on Camera Kits are ready-to-use vision extensions that include an adapter board in addition to the camera and offer the most cost-effective prototyping approach.

Furthermore, Basler will present its cooperation activities with Amazon Web Services at the show. Basler and AWS will work together in the future as a "Go-To-Market Partner" regarding the AWS services Amazon Lookout for Vision and AWS Panorama. Basler is also represented on the digital presentation channels: At the Embedded World Conference, twice at the Embedded World Forum, and also at the Expert Panel "Embedded Vision: success factors for generating customer value", to which Basler CMO Arndt Bake was invited on the initiative of the German Engineering Federation.
