The MC2066 is a highly integrated, programmable laser-driver biCMOS IC that's intended for SONET/SDH applications to 2.5 Gbits/s. Using differential PECL data and clock inputs, it supplies bias and modulation current for driving an edge-emitting laser. These inputs minimize pattern-dependent jitter. The device also includes automatic power control for maintaining a constant average output power over temperature and life. The modulation current is temperature-compensated to minimize variation in extinction ratio over temperature. Output flags indicate laser end-of-life as well as failure of the APC circuitry to maintain average output power. This IC also features rise/fall times less than 100 ps, and independently programmable laser bias and modulation currents. It has a bias current to 100 mA and a modulation current to 65 mA at VCC = 3.3 V. Also, it operates with a 3.3-V supply. Available this month in die or in a package, the MC2067 costs $8.00 each in 10,000-unit quantities.
