Reportedly the industry’s first such video processor, the MB86H50 is capable of real-time compression and decompression of high-definition, TV-level video in H.264 format. The device, expected in March 2007 and built on the company’s 90-nm process technology, enables high-resolution recording, playback, and transmission of high-definition video on portable A/V products, hard-disk recorders, and home-network equipment. Compressing and decompressing video with a maximum of 1,440 dots x 1,080 lines, sound is simultaneously compressed/decompressed in Dolby Digital format. Reportedly, this is the first time these processing features have been integrated onto a single chip for general use. Additionally, the device is said to be the first to integrate two pieces of embedded, 256-Mb FCRAM. When available, the MB86H50 will be packaged in a 650-pin FBGA with a sample price of $120 each.
