Claimed as the industryÕs first silicon to support the new JPEG 2000 image compression standard, the ADV-JP2000 is said to provide the necessary hardware acceleration to perform this compression in a low-power, low-cost package. Targeting the digital still camera market, the chip takes advantage of the companyÕs spatial ultra-efficient recursive filtering (SURF) wavelet technology. Wavelet technology is the core technology upon which the JPEG 2000 standard is based. The device is fabricated in 0.18m CMOS, consumes 100 mW in active mode and less than 100 mA in power-down mode, features a nominal operating voltage of 1.5V to 1.8V and 3.3V for I/O, and comes in a 48-pin LFBGA package. It is capable of compressing five 3-Mpixel images in 1 second. In addition, the IC provides lossless compression of images of up to 10 bits/component and lossy support of up to 14 bits/component. Pricing is $14 each/10,000.
