Described as the smallest CODEC with fully differential-capable headphone driver, the WM8987L provides hi-fi quality stereo audio to wireless headsets and other wearable electronics. The device is designed to address Bluetooth Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) applications and equivalent proprietary alternatives. Measuring 4 mm x 4 mm x 0.75 mm in a 28-pin COL QFN package, it operates from a 1.8 V power supply, and, by driving headphone loads differentially, eliminates the need for output capacitors. Other features include a SNR of 87 dB (A-weighted) for recording and 95 dB for playback at 1.8 V, bass boost, tone control, 3D enhancement, and granular power management that disables unused sub-circuits. Price is $1.71 each/10,000. WOLFSON MICROELECTRONICS PLC, San Diego, CA. (858) 676-5090.
