As a complete interface for smart-card communications, the low-power, low-cost DS8023 performs level translation between a host microcontroller and a 5-, 3-, or 1.8-V smart card. The device offers a stop mode that reduces current draw to only 10 nA while the card is inactive. This low-power stop mode can significantly extend battery life in portable applications such as wireless POS terminals. The interface provides ±8-kV (minimum) ESD protection (IEC) to prevent damage to the application during card insertion and removal. It supplies up to 80 mA for smart-card operation and operates from a single supply. Because it meets ISO 7816 and EMV Level I specifications, the DS8023 is well-suited for financial terminals, consumer set-top boxes, and smart-card reader products. The device is designed to be a replacement upgrade for parts with higher power consumption and no stop mode. The DS8023 is available in a lead-free, 28-pin SO package or 28-pin TSSOP package, and is fully specified over the ?40°C to 85°C extended industrial temperature range. Prices start at $0.67 in quantities of 1000. An evaluation kit will be available soon. MAXIM INTEGRATED PRODUCTS, Sunnyvale, CA. (800) 998-8800.
