FTDI has expanded its X-Chip series of USB-to-serial interface chips with the new ultra-compact FT234XD. Contained in a 3 x 3 mm 12-pin DFN package optimized for smaller PCB designs, the highly integrated UART interface IC allows asynchronous serial data transfer, supporting data transfer rates from 300 bits/s to 3 Mbits/s. The device boasts low power operation, typically drawing 8 mA when active and 70 µm in suspend mode. Optional clock output selection enables glue-less interfacing with the system microcontroller or FPGA, and with built-in clock generation, no external crystal is required. Integrated 2048 byte MTP memory stores device descriptors and carries out CBUS I/O configuration. A sophisticated USB BCD mechanism enables peripheral devices to perceive connection to a higher rated power source, resulting in more efficient charging. The 512 byte receive/transmit buffers, utilizing smoothing technology, enhance data throughput, and with a -40°C to +85°C operational temperature range, the device is specified for harsh working environments. Pricing for the FT234XD interface IC starts at $1.97 each/10-49.
