NOR Flash Handles Secure, ASIL D Automotive Apps

ArmorFlash MX78 developed by Macronix addresses cybersecurity and automotive rugged requirements.

Macronix’s ArmorFlash MX78 secure NOR flash memory targets automotive cybersecurity applications. It was developed using the ISO/SAE 21434 development process and thus is compliant with the ISO 26262 ASIL D functional-safety standard. The MX78 is also a FIPS 140-2 Level 2 validated cryptographic module.

“The MX78 blends high reliability with advanced security features and certified development processes to provide automotive manufacturers with a secure NOR flash solution that meets stringent functional-safety and cybersecurity standards, while accelerating system design and qualification," said Dr. Donald Huang, director of product marketing and cybersecurity manager at Macronix.

He added, “Automotive electronics increasingly face threats to both functional operation and cybersecurity safeguards, due in large part to software-defined vehicles, over-the-air-updates, and rapidly change regulatory requirements. The MX78 is significant in this regard because it addresses those challenges simultaneously; it's a critical element in automotive safety."

The MX78 supports SPI, QSPI, and OctaBus interfaces. The chips are built using a single bit per cell, floating-gate technology, allowing them to handle temperatures up to 125°C. It also supports AES 128/256-bit, Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm (ECDSA), and Elliptic Curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) key exchange along with SHA-256 and HMAC-SHA256 hash support.

The tamper-resistant system uses a physical unclonable function (PUF). It’s available in capacities up to 512 Mb.
