The P82CF201, a single-chip, dual fan manager, adjusts fan speed according to temperature using pulse-width modulation (PWM) as opposed to continuously running the fan at maximum speed. This is said to boost system performance by freeing the system processor from fan-control duties. Users can choose to start the fan at a predetermined temperature or constantly cool the system at low noise and low fan speed. The fan speed increases linearly as system temperature rises. Via a sensing resistor, the device detects the fan-fault condition and protects against fan failure during operation. Should one fan fail, the other fan is turned to maximum speed. Other features include a built-in watchdog timer. The P82CF201 is priced at $0.99 each/10,000. PHILIPS SEMICONDUCTORS, Sunnyvale, CA. (800) 234-7381.
