Described as a low-end digital signal controller (DSC), the 56F8000 promises to reduce production costs and speed time to market for industrial and appliance applications. It is also said to be the industry’s first DSC to combine the programming ease of a microcontroller with the signal-processing power and efficiency of a digital-signal processor. Based on a 56800/E core, the device employs third-generation flash memory technology and manages power consumption via controlled clocking to all peripherals, auto standby mode for the a/d converter and low-frequency standby mode for the entire chip. Other features include 96 MHz PWM with programmable fault capability, ADC/PWM synchronization, 16 KB of flash memory, 4 KB of RAM, I2C bus, a tunable relaxation oscillator, four 16-bit timers, and up to 26 GPIOs.
