14-Bit DAC Blazes Along At 1.3 Gbits/s

Jan. 25, 2007
The speed of the single-channel MB86065 digital-to-analog converter from Fujitsu Microelectronics allows direct-IF frequencies to be guaranteed above 400 MHz.

With a 1.3-Gsample/s conversion speed, the single-channel MB86065 is the fastest 14-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC), according to Fujitsu Microelectronics America. The fast conversion rate enables direct-IF frequencies to be guaranteed above 400 MHz. This widens the spurious-free generating region and relaxes subsequent filtering requirements. Higher direct-IF architectures are more versatile than direct conversion, allowing true platform solutions capable of rapid retargeting to different market and frequency requirements.

The MB86065 is backward compatible with the earlier MB86064, a dual, 14-bit, 1-Gsample/s DAC, and includes the same Waveform Memory Module (WMM) developed by Fujitsu. The WMM allows waveforms to be downloaded and executed on-chip, which reduces the need for a high-speed data generator for device test and evaluation. Also, the MB86065 continues to offer a superior system-partitioning solution with digital pre-processing using 0.65-µm ASIC or FPGA technology. In particular, reprogrammable implementations provide flexibility with no impact on the mixed-signal component, which defines system performance. The MB86065 comes in a Fujitsu enhanced fine-pitch ball grid array (EFBGA) package measuring 12 mm by 12 mm.
