A new 3-GHz wireless infrastructure processor from Texas Instruments enhances applications for GSM base stations, while also addressing the requirements of new markets like WiMAX and TD-SCDMA. With three cores running at 1-GHz each, the TMS320TCI6487 allows base station designers to extend existing designs while entering new markets with a scaleable, flexible solution for small-form-factor applications. Manufacturers will be able to support up to 10 EDGE-enabled carriers with one chip. In addition, the multi-core DSP, which is manufactured in a 65-nm process, provides additional GSM functions like interference cancellation and better reception for high-data-rate applications.

The TCI6487 is also optimized for infrastructure design in TD-SCDMA (Time Division-Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access), China's unique air interface. The 3-GHz "baseband on a chip" can support three carriers and 69 users per device. In addition, the TCI6487 is well-suited for use with the emerging OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access) and the future demands of LTE (Long-Term Evolution). The processor works in conjunction with TI's optimized software library and complete analog front-end, as well as key products from third parties. A complete 10-MHz, two-antenna, three-sector solution can easily be implemented, reducing overall cost and power consumption per channel.

The TCI6487 is currently sampling with targeted customers. For more information, go to www.ti.com/tci6487.
