Combining hardware, firmware and software on a single, low-power Voice-over-Packet (VoP) chip, this latest version of Entropia can support up to 336 full-duplex Pulse Code Modulated (PCM) channels of ATM Adaptation Layer Type 1 (AAL1) traffic. The first Entropia IC, released in July, provides support for 256 full-duplex Adaptive Differential PCM (ADPCM32) AAL2 channels. (By using the AAL1 protocol, service providers can employ existing ATM networks to deliver packetized voice services without compression, whereas the AAL2 provides for voice compression and, therefore, much higher voice traffic over ATM nets.)
Employing an Asynchronous Computing Engine (ACE) architecture, Entropia systems-on-a-chip are designed to provide full convergence gateway functionality. And with their proprietary Sigma DSP, the SOCs are capable of operating at rates of 7.2 GMACs. Price of Entropia chips range from $553 to $723 each/10K.
