Chip Connects Devices To The Internet Via Ethernet LANs
Touted as an inexpensive solution, the SmartStack for Ethernet allows Internet connectivity without a major hardware redesign. OEMs integrate the SmartStack into any piece of equipment, converting it into a stand-alone client that connects to any Ethernet LAN. Combining the MAC and Internet protocols into a single, off-the-shelf DSP promises a new generation of low-cost Internet devices that access the Internet in LAN-based environments such as offices, medical facilities, shop floors, educational institutions, smart buildings, and homes equipped with broadband access. The SmartStack creates a direct connection, without need for a PC or ISP while providing Internet functions like e-mail, FTP and Web server. SmartStack for Ethernet does require standard flash memory and a standard, off-the-shelf PHY component to connect the DSP to the RJ45 connector. Pricing is $11.50 each/25,000.
