Aimed at cellular phones with built-in MP3 audio playback, the STA015 MP3 decoder includes an adaptive differential pulse code modulation (ADPMC) codec to allow voice recording and playback. The compressed voice is stored in the same flash memory used for the MP3 music files.
The new decoder is based on the same DSP platform as the company's previous MP3 decoder, the STA013. The very long instruction word (VLIW) DSP core of this platform is optimized for audio applications and achieves what is claimed to be the lowest power consumption, typically 85 mW at 2.4V, on the market.
With production scheduled for mid 2000, the STA015 will be available in SO28, TQFP44 and LBGA packages priced at $10 each/1000.
