March North American semiconductor equipment billings continue decline, down nearly 25% YoY

April 24, 2019
The recent sharp decline in North American semiconductor equipment billings not only continued in March, but accelerated, according to the latest Equipment Market Data Subscription Billings Report published Tuesday by SEMI.

The figures show that North American-based manufacturers of semiconductor equipment posted preliminary global billings of $1.83 billion in March (three-month average basis), which is down 1.9% from February and down 24.6% from March 2018's $2.43 billion.

March was the fifth-straight month of year-over-year (YoY) decline for North American semiconductor equipment billings, and YoY growth has now decelerated increasingly in 11 straight months since a recent peak of 25.9% YoY growth in April 2018. Total monthly billings' recent peak was May 2018's $2.702.3 billion, and has likewise decreased month-to-month in nine out of the 10 months since.

“March billings of North American test and assembly equipment manufacturers showed modest improvement over the prior month,” said Terry Tsao, SEMI chief marketing officer, in the association's press release Tuesday. “Despite the increase for this segment, overall billings growth expectations for North American semiconductor equipment suppliers are muted for the rest of the year.”

The SEMI Billings report uses three-month moving averages of worldwide billings for North American-based semiconductor equipment manufacturers. Billings figures are in millions of U.S. dollars.
