May global semiconductor sales down nearly 15% year-over-year, and far worse in the Americas
The Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) announced July 1 that worldwide sales of semiconductors during May 2019 were $33.1 billion, down 14.6% year-over-year, and up 1.9% from April.
May marked the fifth-straight month of negative sales growth on a year-over-year basis, while sales into the Americas increased for the first time in seven months.
Regionally, May month-to-month sales increased 5.4% in China, 1.4% in the Americas, and 0.9% in Japan, while falling 0.4% in Europe, and 1.1% in Asia Pacific/All Other. On a year-over-year basis, sales were down across all regions, with the Americas down 27.9%, Japan down 13.6%, Asia Pacific/All Other down 12.6%, and China down 9.8%.
Monthly sales are compiled by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization and represent a three-month moving average.
