An industry-standard SPI serial interface is featured in the MCP2510 interface controller, which supports the Controller Area Network (CAN) Specification 2.0B. The 18-pin IC enables an easy connection to virtually any microcontroller, it’s claimed. By using the chip, designers can select from a much broader range of microcontrollers for their designs because the CAN peripheral is not required to be integrated on the device. The MCP2510 provides immediate CAN support across the entire breadth of the firm’s PICmicro line of 8-bit RISC µCs, providing a seamless migration path and maximum design flexibility for CAN designs. On-board features include: interrupt capability; message masking, filtering and prioritization; multi-purpose I/O pins; and multiple buffers.
